Apple's Latest Addition -- Angela Ahrendts

Hi Love!

Angela Ahrendts might be one of the coolest women I discovered this month. Angela is the Senior Vice President of Apple and she makes 73.4 million while she runs the retail and online operations at the company's headquarters. Besides being a true motivator and genius at her job she is also recognized for being one of the most powerful women in the world.

  • Previously she worked as the CEO of Burberry. She is credited with vamping up Burberry's online sales by screening runway shows to executives.
  • On the first days IPADS were available she provided these tablets to store owners and to Burberry's management team.
  • Besides running Apple and really changing the workplace for store employees who are paid between $13-18 an hour, she has managed to stay completely fashionable.

Angela is just more than a fashion love she has spent over 30 years being a leader in technology and retail.

Honoring Women for National Hispanic Heritage Month

Hi Love,

I wanted to share this special story with you.

Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month: A Nurse's Story
By Blair Beggan, Director of Communications for The Association of Air Medical Services

National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) is time for Americans to celebrate the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States.  But for those of us at the Association for Air Medical Services (AAMS), it is time to honor the Hispanic men and women who are making their mark every day by saving lives in the medical transport profession.  One of these women is Maria Fernandez, the Director of Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando, Florida. As an immigrant and a single mother, Maria faced both personal and professional challenges to rise to her current position, but she wouldn't change a thing. Her heritage and her culture only aid in the work she does today, and I was lucky enough to sit down and speak with her.

1)     Could you describe what your current position at Nemours Children's Hospital entails?

Currently I work as the Director of Critical Care Transport Services. My patients' ages range from birth to 18 years of age.  And although a lot of my current position requires management and oversight, I am still able to practice my clinical skills. I started as a nurse practitioner, and to this day I still go out and do field work when needed. For me, the ability to go out and transport a pediatric patient that requires critical care is the most rewarding part of my job.  I like to be there for the families and friends of the patient, as well as the patient themselves. And my job doesn't end when the patient leaves the hospital. I follow-up with the patients once they go home and keep track of their progress.

2)     How are you involved with the Association for Air Medical Services (AAMS)?

I have been involved with AAMS since 1992!  During my first nursing job, I worked very closely with the director of my medical transport team. In 1997, I became a member of AAMS and was involved with the organization from Day One. Being able to attend conferences and training seminars helped me to expand my network and grow as a medical transport care provider.  I love the wealth of information that AAMS has given me, both for my professional development and for the growth of the organizations I work for.

3)     Can you tell us any stories about patients or situations that were especially meaningful to you? (We are sensitive to privacy information)

Several years back, I was on a medical transport for a premature baby who had not yet been home due to ongoing medical issues. The concern was that the baby was going to develop blindness because of how premature he was. The patient was very unstable, but needed to be transported to a specialist at another hospital and the decision on whether or not the baby could make the flight came down to me.  But I was confident in my team and the people around me. I knew we could safely transport this baby and give him a chance at a great quality of life. The baby was in Puerto Rico and it was a two hour transport to the states. We stayed by the baby's side the whole time, making sure he was comfortable and stable. He survived the flight, underwent eye surgery and he is now able to see. The family feels like my decision to transport their son is the reason he isn't blind today, and I still keep in touch with them to this day. This type of story is the reason I do my job - I want to give these children a chance to have the best life possible.

Early this year I had another patient experience that really moved me emotionally. A teenage child was found unconscious about two hours away from my hospital. The medical crew on site was not sure what had caused the child to pass out. I arrived on the scene and immediately began to communicate with my team back in Orlando. We used FaceTime to communicate and share thoughts about the condition. We came to the conclusion that the patient may be having an allergic reaction to medicine. We changed the medicine and, amazingly, the child did a complete 180 and survived. It was wonderful to be able to use my knowledge in a situation like this and help save a life. I tell people all the time that I picked the best profession!

4)     Being that it is Hispanic Heritage Month, can you tell us a little about your background and how your heritage has helped you become the woman you are today?

I was born in Cuba, but I left for Mexico at a very young age. Shortly thereafter, when I was two years old, we immigrated to the United States. My mom was a single parent in New York raising two children, and we grew up speaking mostly Spanish in our home. She was definitely an inspiration motivating us to pursue higher education and take advantage of life in the U.S. Being a single mother myself, I appreciate her even more today and understand how hard she worked to give me a wonderful life.

I moved to Miami in 1978 because I wanted to go to University of Miami to get nursing degree. I graduated from nursing school in 1983 and went on to get my masters in nursing at Florida International University (FIU). I then received my Masters in Business Administration and Health Services Administration in 2006. And this December, I will be completing my doctorate in nursing!

I think growing up in a Spanish-speaking household gave me a huge advantage in the nursing world, especially in Miami and Orlando. I am at an advantage for working with patients that a have a Hispanic background because I can speak to them in their native language and put them at ease. During times of crisis, people prefer to speak and communicate in their native tongue and it is wonderful to be able to offer than to them.  I love being a mentor for other Hispanic women looking to pursue a career in nursing - I tell them it is something they won't ever regret!

If you know an amazing women that you want to honor for National Hispanic Heritage Month please submit info to raventait@gmail.com

Resolving conflict in the workplace

Hi Love!

Let's talk about workplace tension and conflict. Being quick to resolve issues in the workplace can be complex especially if the employee feels that there voice is ignored and their needs are unmet. To help you address these issues -- meet Cornelia Gamlem, SPHR and Barbara Mitchell. These ladies are the creators of "THE ESSENTIAL WORKPLACE CONFLICT HANDBOOK: A Quick and Handy Resource for Any Manager, Team Leader, HR Professional, or Anyone Who Wants to Resolve Disputes and Increase Productivity" (Career Press, 2015). This amazing handbook is an ideal resource for anyone ready to confront conflict at work rather than run from it. Managed correctly, conflict can be a positive source for innovation and creativity.

Cornelia Gamlem

This book will guide you through these common myths about workplace conflict:

Problem: Conflict is always negative and should be avoided at work.

Solution: Quite the contrary. When problems are hidden or masked, they aren’t solved. They fester and grow into bigger problems. Conflict has to be acknowledged and addressed. A big misconception about conflict is that it’s a negative force. Workplace conflict is often creativity and innovation trying to happen and savvy organizations look for ways to embrace and optimize conflict.

Problem: Difficult people are almost always the cause of conflict.

Solution: Failing to set realistic expectations is a big contributor. If people don’t understand what the organization, their manager, or their teammates expect, confusion and conflict can result. Set expectations early, beginning with the job interview and again during the first days of employment.  Let people know the job entails – its functions and tasks – and what success in the role looks like.

Problem: The problem at the root of a conflict is usually obvious.

Solution: Getting to the source involves dialogue, conversations and some detective work. There are a number of skills and techniques that you have to employ: attending skills which put everyone on an even level; encouraging skills enabled others to elaborate; clarifying skills to reduce ambiguity and establish clarity; and reflecting skills that allow the opportunity to restate in your own words what you’ve hear the other person say. Get good information by varying the types of questions you ask, such as open-ended questions, close-ended questions, fact-based questions or opinion-based questions.

Problem: In conflict, there are always winners and losers.

Solution: Focusing on interests, rather than positions is much more effective. In any conflict, think about what your interest is and then separate your position from your interest. Be able to articulate your interest(s) to yourself and to others and be able to explain why it’s important to you. When you discuss them with the others, be specific and give good information. Making your interests come alive will increase the likelihood that the other side will agree that your interests are important. It will help to move the discussion away from positions.

Of course I am not going to give away all of their secrets so the only way you will learn more is if you pick up a copy of their handbook.

How to Make A Profit Even If A Catastrophe Hits!

Hi Love!

How could we forget Hurricane Sandy? Besides being one of the scariest hurricanes to hit the east coast, Sandy destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses. While most people are still re-cooping, Deb Di Gregorio, a Maplewood resident and working mother of two decided to write "Triumph Over Toothpicks, The Essential Guide to Business in the Digital Age ". After speaking to groups of small businesses impacted by Sandy, Gregorio decided to shed light on her experience and how she was overcome the challenges she faced being a working mother during one of the biggest catastrophes in America.

Available via Amazon

To resurrect their business, business owners were expected to quickly learn new advances within technology, mobile and how to use other platforms. Those experiences led Gregorio to combine the perspectives of each business owner she came across to create a robust Kickstarter and finally her book.

Quick to consume, fun to read with straight-up advice and completely irreverent images: Blessed Virgin Mary at the Annunciation taking a selfie, anyone? That’s just one of the many off-kilter, deliberately low-tech collage illustrations that accompany the book’s uniquely clear-eyed point-of-view.

When done, readers will never see our digital world the same way again — business owners will be empowered and in charge of their digital destiny. Please pick up a copy of Gregorio's book to educate yourself and to learn the tips and tricks these business owners used to keep their companies afloat in an ever changing economy.

Please be sure to pick up your copy here:  http://www.amazon.com/Triumph-Over-Toothpicks-Essential-Business/dp/0996192808

Mini Drug Tests? Elizabeth Holmes Is Saving Lives

Hi Love!

Elizabeth Holmes is the youngest self-made female billionaire of our time. With an aim to provide blood tests at drugstores around the world for an extremely reduced cost, she has successfully transformed the healthcare industry with her innovative ideas. She is compared to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, she doesn't own a television and she dropped out of Stanford University at 19 years old. She is worth 4.6 billion.

Theranos is her unique biotech company that she began in 2003. Her strategy is to completely focus on her business by spending most of her time at her own company. She created Theranos for the people not to become wealthy however her idea was so advanced every health care official wanted to invest into her way of thinking. Every test that she created is a simple prick to the finger which can be used to check for issues such as cancer and cholesterol etc. Theranos is valued at 10 billion dollars and probably much more by 2016.

She believes that " healthcare is the leading cause of bankruptcy" no one should have to ever have to suffer financially to better their health. Her idea is simple: Make healthcare affordable for everyone.

Paid Maternity Leave -- Nationwide

Hi Love!

Susan Wojcicki is the CEO of YouTube, a 40 billion dollar video sharing website that is a subset of Google. Wojciciki is 47, she has 5 children and still is able to manage motherhood and a top position at work. When she graduated from college the internet didn't even exist yet however over the course of her life she took in two of her friends who soon created Google in her garage in 1998. By 1999, she was Google's first marketing manager and is now credited with having an active role in the creation of Google Images, Google Books and the acquisition of YouTube.

YouTube logo 2013.svg

YouTube has 1 billion users worldwide and Wojciciki oversees the entire corporation. With YouTube producing numerous videos daily, Wojciciki almost never saw maternity leave especially when she was pregnant with her fifth child. Now she is on a mission to get the government to create a law that provides paid maternity leave and family benefits nationwide.Currently, only 5% of U.S employers offer maternity leave which is absolutely absurd. Accordingly, as a way to support her mission, I wanted to share this amazing story with you.

Check out her profile below:

If she was able to run a company with five children without any excuses we shouldn't have any either. Let's get to work!

Female Powerhouse Leading the Marine Industry

Hi Love,

Jaclyn Baumgarten is the future of the recreational marine industry.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:amybonet:Desktop:* Cruzin:Images + logos:Jaclyn_Baumgarten3.jpg

In 2012, Jaclyn founded Cruzin, one of the first to enter the peer-to-peer boating marketplace. This summer she orchestrated a strategic merger in the male dominated marine industry with Boatsetter her strong competitor and is now at the helm as the new CEO of the merged company.
Peer to peer boat sharing is a highly competitive space with every player claiming to be the ³Airbnb of boats². But in this emerging market with new incumbents rushing to gain market share, Jaclyn asked herself, ³What is the most strategic way for me to accelerate the speed of innovation in the marine industry, and claim the leadership role?² Hence the idea to merge Cruzin and Boatsetter was realized. For the past three years, she has dedicated all of her energies into transforming and growing the boating industry.
In addition to merging Cruzin with Boatsetter, Jaclyn has also:

·     Worked as  the youngest and one of the few female developers in the male-dominated commercial development industry. She worked for Westfield, the world¹s leading retail commercial real estate developer, and ran one of the largest retail development projects in the city of Los Angeles.

·      She has a Stanford MBA and has held key leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies for 13 years prior to founding Cruzin.

Jaclyn is emerging as a key thought-leader in the boating industry and in the Silicon Valley start-up scene:
·      In 2014, Jaclyn pioneered the first peer-to-peer boating insurance coverage
in the business, working hand and hand with Concept Insurance for eight months to craft the policy that launched the peer-to-peer market in the marine industry.

·      She is also a key panelist at boating industry conferences speaking about how collaborative consumption is a win-win for the marine industry.

·      She was recognized by Boating Industry Magazine¹s 2014 ³Movers and Shakers² issue

·      Was one of the founding participants of Women's Startup Lab (WSL) in Silicon Valley and is now a mentor and frequent speaker at WSL.
As a major force in the boating marketplace and tech industry, Jaclyn wants to share her expertise with other women. Thankfully she shared this story with us. Take Note.

October is National Women's Small Business Month!

Hi Love,

Today we are celebrating all of the phenomenal female entrepreneurs in our areas. Please email me if you would like to be included in this lineup.

First on this empowering lineup:

Jakki Liberman, as a single mom of four kids she wanted items for her children that promoted a healthier lifestyle while still being fun. She founded Bumkins Finer Baby Products to do so, and has since partnered with Disney, DC Comics, and Dr. Seuss for designer prints.

Following in her father’s footsteps, Debbie Melnick started her own wildly successful stationery line Debbie Lynn, Inc. But on top of balancing her professional success with the challenges of motherhood, she’s done it all while also battling Multiple Sclerosis and being confined to a wheelchair.

Staci Ericson has learned to take challenges and turn them into creative outlets. That’s how she came up with Golly Gee-pers, a company that promotes and teaches children social skills and manners.

An aunt and niece from New England, both named Sally, had long talked about starting a line of jewelry that had an inspiring message. Then, niece Sally Jane Waite, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer while 7-months pregnant. It was then, their message- “Bee Courageous, Bee Bold, Bee a Survivor, Just Bee” to coincide with the bee designs, was born. (www.sallyjane.net).

Cara Cerutti Holmes realized the need for a fashionable way to carry necessary items while staying hands-free. So she created Füchsin Ave, a company that provides high-style hands-free bags to carry necessities. Her star item, the SmarterGarter, fastens around the thigh or boot, and comes in a variety of colors, styles, and fabrics.

Susanna Lee wanted to make sure her young boys were safe during bath time. She launched Peachy® in 2010 with theAqueduck® – the first faucet extender in the market. The line now includes the Single Handle Extender, Double Handle Extender, and the Bath Spout Extender, each designed to keep kids safe in the bathroom.

Maia Haag is the owner and founder of the multi-million dollar company I See Me!, the original online hub providing kids with personalized books and gifts. Haag has created, written, and executed dozens of unique titles allowing children to star in their storybooks.

Michele Welsh was overwhelmed when she took her kids to an amusement park, and decided to write her cell phone number on their arms. That day, SafetyTat was born. The child tattoos feature a space to write a phone number, and come in many styles.

Olga Cohen is the founder of Olga’s Secret—the makers of safe and natural products for women. Olga’s Secret specializes in providing an effective solution for vaginal dryness, a symptom that often comes along with menopause.

Please support these amazing women for National Women's Small Business Month.
